This post is a reply to a comment posted by Yuly regarding a problem with her wireless access in Windows 7. the question is:
Hi Nelson,
I have a problem that when I try to connect wirelessly it connects fine but then says limited access! I am only able to connect successfully and access the net on my home wireless. I dont think it is an access point problem though because it doesnt work anywhere else i.e. not at anyone elses home, or school etc.??? It is so frustrating!!!! Please Help!
thanks for the question Yuly.
the immediate thing I would check when having a problem like this is the TCP/IP settings. if you can only connect to a wireless access point at home and nothing else, most likely your laptop has been setup with a static IP address. to check if this is the case, to do the following:
click on the Start button, and then click on Control Panel and click on the Network and Internet applet.
then click on Network and Sharing Center on the following window:
on the following window click on Change adapter settings on the left panel.
under the network connections, Right-click on the wireless network connection icon, and go to Properties:
select the Internet Protocol Version 4 ( TCP/IPv4) and click on Properties:
the TCP/IP properties will come up:
Make sure “obtain an IP address automatically” and “Obtain DNS server address automatically settings are checked. click on OK on all the open windows, and see if your computer gets an IP address automatically.
I hope that helps, and thanks for for the question.
regards,
Nelson.

What if that doesn't work and it is still only giving me limited access?

I recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 7 and cannot connect to the internet via my wireless router (Netgear wndr3300). I get the message “Problem found with wireless adapter or access point. Reset your wireless network adapter.” I have had no issues connecting wirelessly using my old laptop (vista).
How do I reset the adapter….I need specific instructions with pictures if possible, please. ( I might add that my son said he downloaded “something” from Netgear onto the Windows 7 laptop and I did get on the internet wirelessly, but then my laptop with vista would not connect. When I reinstalled the Netgear on the vista computer I got the above message). This weekend I was able to connect on the Windows 7 laptop at a hotel without issue. I am in my 60′s and very confused. Thanks for any help.
I think this should work.
Uhhhhhhhhhh this doesn’t work fullstop because that’s my default settings.

I have a brand new acer aspire 5749-6850 laptop and have not been able to fully connect to the internet since I opened it. It says limited connectivity. I went through the steps you suggested and everything appears to be right already. It came with a trial version of mcafee which I have since uninstalled and still no luck. I have a made up IP address 169.***.**……..I don’t know what else to do, please help me.
Hi Tasha, do you have any other device connected to your access point and working? In other words, have you made sure the access point is not the problem?
I got a brandnew laptop with installed windows 7, a little smaler as my previous one (which is with Vista, just to make travelling easier. Now I can not get into the Internet. I tried 3 different WiFi locations, they give me ther password the laptop connected fine but , connecting for 1/2 hour without any result. I tried all the tings mentioned above, no way, no access.
Anybody can help me out?
