Changing DNS Configuration On ESX

I just finished installing ESXi 3.5 on my old server, and everything looks fine, except the host name. the server is not on a domain yet, and there is no enterprise DHCP or DNS on my network yet, but I want the hostname to be different than “localhost.localdomain” default one. so how we change that? it seems to be pretty simple, follow these steps.

ESX hostname change

from your VMware infrastructure client click on the Configuration tab, and then click on DNS and Routing under the software section:

DNS and Routing

then click on Properties on top:

propertes

change the host identification, and DNS if you like on the following window:

DNS And routing Configuration

after choosing your settings click on OK.

Most likely you will need to restart the server in order for the changes to take effect. the new name should appear after the server comes back.

hostname changed

that’s it. I hope it helps.
