Changing Comcast DNS Servers

The other day while browsing the Internet suddenly the browser became unresponsive and I was able to browse no more. I first thought the problem was local on my computer. I ran an ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew command, but it did not help. then I went through the basic router configuration menu, but everything was normal. then I tried to ping Google, Yahoo. etc, and I got a respond from the ping. the I typed Google IP address on the browser address bar, and I got to Google home page, but I could not get to it by typing the name. that quickly rung my bell about Domain Name Services (DNS) being the problem.

I use Comcast as my ISP,and even though is very unlikely for them to have DNS problems, I wanted to test my theory that my Internet problem was actually DNS. so, I went to http://opendns.org to get the IP addresses for the free DNS service provide, and configured the router to use those addresses.

sure enough, I was able to get to websites on the Internet by using the names again. which proved that Comcast DNS was the problem.

If you have comcast as your ISP and have similar issues, I recommend running the same test I did. the process is very simple. if you have a Linksys router go to . https://www.opendns.com/smb/start/device/linksys , and follow the instructions on how to change the DNS server IP addresses. for other router brands, follow the documentation that came with the router.

No need to signup for a different service you can use Google's public DNS servers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
