I was just reading an article at PC World about a study carried out by AptiQuant a psychometric consulting firm that provides hiring exams for businesses, this company gave online IQ tests to more than 100,000 people. Visitors arrived either through search engines or through advertisements on other sites, and Aptiquant made a note of which browser each test taker was using, according to the test, The IE browser users scored the lowest.

read the full article here http://www.aptiquant.com/news/is-internet-explorer-for-the-dumb-a-new-study-suggests-exactly-that/

I personally find these tests inaccurate, and pointless. this website forevergeeks.com gets about 80,000 unique visits a month from search engines, and about 39% of this unique visitors use IE.

Most visitors to this site are IT professionals and I assume they are well aware of other browsers, and somehow they are still using IE. should I assume they are stupid because they are using IE? not at all. there might be many reasons why they still using IE, corporate policies, internal application comparability reasons, and many just because they like IE. I myself use IE9 regularly for website development, and comparability testing, because despite these tests trying to portrait IE as the worst browser, IE is still being used by the majority of Internet users. call them whatever you like, but one thing I’m sure, they ain’t stupid.

one of our users got in touch with me about a problem he was having with his IE9 browser on his Windows vista operating system when opening emails in our newly OWA 2010 page. the error he was getting was this:

You may have already opened your mailbox on a different browser tab. If you feel you’ve received this message in error, try refreshing your browser.

this error only appears to come up if you are using IE9 and Windows vista. the first thing I recommended my user was to update his operating system for the latest IE patches. that seems to have fixed his problem because I have not heard back from him.

not hearing back from a user is a good sign, that means the problem is gone.

cheers,

I have 3 browsers installed on my computer, Firefox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer. I use all of them to test websites I design to make sure compatibility on different platforms, but for my daily Internet browsing I only use Firefox. On Windows 7 Internet Explorer is the default browser, and links in Outlook or Windows Live Mail automatically open using Internet Explorer, but if you don’t want to use Internet Explorer to open those links and you are using Windows 7, you can easily change that.

do the following.

click on the start button, and click on Control Panel. once in control panel click on Appearance and Personalization. on the left side menu click on Programs , then click on Default Programs. and finally click on Set your default programs.

a list of programs should come up on the left:

select the browser you want to set as default and then at the bottom click on set this program as default. In my case that made Firefox my default browser to open links in all my computer.

if you still want Internet Explorer to open certain links like FTP sites or other protocols then click on Choose defaults for this program and choose the formats and protocols.

that should do it.

Outlook Web Access from exchange 2003 and up offer an option to change the password through the web. the feature has to be enabled from Exchange first, so if this feature is not available on your OWA, talk to your IT people to see if its enabled.
to change the password, within your Outlook Web Access page, click on Options on the left side panel:

The temporary Internet Files folder on your computer is a dynamic place, every time you visit a website on the Internet, all the web files composing that website get transferred from the hosting server to your computer Temporary Internet Files folder. that includes audio files, pictures and documents. so if you surf a lot on the Internet that Temporary Internet File folder get’s big. I believe there is a size limit on how much this folder can grow, on Windows XP that size is 252 MB. if you want to see the settings for this folder click on Start then Control Panel then click on Internet Options and beneath Browsing History click on Settings:

From this window you can change the settings on how the Temporary Internet Files behave, and as you can see, you also have the options to not cache anything, that means that every time you visit a website, a fresh copy of the web files will be downloaded onto your computer, this is not good for speeding reasons. most people have websites that they visit frequently, the caching feature speed up the loading process by not requesting a new fresh of copy of the web files, but instead uses the files already on the temporary Internet files, that’s why normally loading a website for the first time takes longer.

another issue I have noticed with the Temporary Internet files is that keeps the Anti-virus scan busy on your computer, especially when it has grown big. because it is such a dangerous folder the antivirus scan everything that get’s loaded to this folder, when the folder has too many files, the scan normally takes longer, thus degrading the performance on your system.

Dude, where is the Script?

OK. so the best way to clean the Temporary Internet files is by using a log off script. every time you shutdown your computer, the script will clean up the temporary Internet files, so it does not grow too big, and the antivirus does not spend too much time scanning it. the script that does the job beautifully is this:

Const TEMPORARY_INTERNET_FILES = &H20&
dim intDepth
Set objShell = CreateObject(“Shell.Application”)
Set objFSO = CreateObject(“Scripting.FileSystemObject”)
‘Clean User Temporary Intenet Files
Set objNameSpace = objShell.Namespace(TEMPORARY_INTERNET_FILES)
Set objFolderItem = objNameSpace.Self
set objFolder=objFSO.GetFolder(objFolderItem.Path)
intDepth=0
RemoveFolder objFolder
‘Clean User Temp Files
Const TemporaryFolder = 2
Set tempFolder = objFSO.GetSpecialFolder(TemporaryFolder)
RemoveFolder tempFolder
sub RemoveFolder(objFolder)
‘ Recursively remove files and folders
intDepth=intDepth+1
on error resume next
for each objFile in objFolder.Files
objFile.Delete true
next
Err.Clear
on error goto 0
for each objSubfolder in objFolder.SubFolders
RemoveFolder objSubFolder
next
intDepth=intDepth-1
if intDepth<>0 then’ Don’t delete top-level folder
on error resume next
objFolder.Delete true
err.Clear
on error goto 0
end if
end sub

I must add that I did not write this script, but I know much about scripting that I know what is doing. I don’t remember quite well where I found the script, but if someone wants to take credit for it, say it on the comments.

download the file attached

Clean-up Temporary Internet Files Script

once you download this files click on Start then Run and type gpedit.msc and click on OK. the Group Policy window should come up:

under the User Configuration option, expand the Windows Settings folder, then click on Scripts ( logon/Log off ) then on the right panel click on Log off to open up the properties:

click on the Add tab. under the Script Name browse to the location where you downloaded the file attached above. leave blank for Script Parameters.

click on Ok. click on OK on the log off window properties also. close out of group policy and restart your computer to see if the script is working. when you shutdown the computer it should say “Running log off script” after the computer restarts, check the temporary Internet files folder to see if its clean.

that’s it, you don’t have to worry about the Temporary Internet Files anymore (:)

Internet Explorer 8 is great – fast, secure and convenient. but there a couple of annoying things that almost made me go back to Firefox. one of those things was the security Warning for secure pages:

this pop-up is annoying, every time I wanted to check my Google reader feeds, or any other secure page I got this warning – pisses me off. so how do you disable it?

easy! do this:

On Internet Explorer click on Tools then click on Internet Options when the Internet Options property comes up, click on the Security tab:

there are many things that might trigger an Internet explorer Page cannot be display error, so don’t take these tips as hard facts, but instead they should serve as a guideline for your troubleshooting efforts. the first thing to check when you open Internet explorer and you get the page cannot be display error is your Internet connection. are you getting an IP address from your router or ISP? if so, are they correct? make sure the DNS numbers you are getting are correct. if you suspect there might be some DNS issues with your router or ISP, you can always use a free DNS services like http://www.opendns.com/ to get rid of that possibility.

Make sure a proxy server is not checked.

I have seen users computers appearing with proxy servers on their Internet Explorer all the sudden, so you should check the proxy server settings. within Internet explorer go to Tools, then click on Internet Options, then click on the Connections tab, then right underneath click on LAN Settings:

Make sure no Proxy Server is set here. the settings should be set to “Automatically detect settings” after checking all these settings, try Internet explorer again.

If it still giving you the same problem. the problem might be spyware.

please run a scan of your computer with http://www.malwarebytes.org/ download the free version.

If malwarebyes does not find anything and you still getting the the page cannot be display error on Internet explorer, repair Internet explorer by executing the following command on the command prompt:

“rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\Inf\ie.inf” that is without quotes.

You will need to insert the Windows XP or any other operating system in order for the repair to work.

If you are a webmaster then you know how a pain in the ass is to make a website compatible with IE6. unlike Firefox, Opera, Safari, and somewhat IE7, IE6 does not follow any web standard, so webmasters end up writing hacks, and many other tricks to make their websites work on IE6. I was planning to just put a banner for IE6 visitors to tell them to upgrade their pre-dinosaur browser to Firefox or IE7, but then going through my Google analytics statistic I noticed that almost 30 % of visitors on this site are still using IE6, so for that reason I fell compelled to find a hack to make the logo of this website which uses PNG alpha transparency to display fine on IE6.

Implementing the PNG transparency hack in IE6

This blog runs on WordPress, and this is the only platform I have tested this hack, but I assume the hack works on any platform as long as you implement it right.

step 1. the first thing you need to do is to download the iepngfix.zip file from here http://www.twinhelix.com/css/iepngfix/ inside the zipped folder, there two files, blank.gif and iepngfix.htc you will need to upload these files to your web server. in my case I uploaded them to WordPress themes directory.

step 2. after you have uploaded to files, add this code on your css stylesheet.

img {
behavior: url(“/wp-content/themes/iepngfix.htc”);
}

as you can see on the css code above, its is customized for my WordPress blog, but you can easily customize it for your own needs. just change the path to where you uploaded the files.

step 3. make sure you have the size of the images defined on your HTML code, otherwise only the blank.gif image will be displayed in ie6. for example in order to display the logo on this site correctly on ie6, I needed to define the size properties on the image like this:

<a href=”http://forevergeeks.com”><img src=http://forevergeeks.com/wp-content/themes/default/images/logo.png”width=”400″ height=”100″alt=”Forever Geeks” border=”0″ </a>

and that’s it, that should make PNG files display fine on ie6.
